Regular school attendance is a vital ingredient for earning a High School Diploma in the state of Florida. Florida Statute 1003.21 requires that all children who have not attained the age of 16 years attend school regularly during the entire school year. Regularly is defined as missing less than ten (10) days of school per semester. Students who miss ten (10) or more days in a semester (excused or unexcused) may be denied credit toward graduation for that semester. Credit denial applies to all class absences including excused, unexcused, tardy to school and early sign out from school. Credit denial can be issued for one class, some classes, or all classes. Credit denial will result in loss of credit regardless of the grade earned. Additionally, Lee County School District attendance policy 4.16 states,
“…If a high school student accrues 10 or more unexcused absences or excused absences, the student shall be referred to Child Study Team at the school to be considered for denial of credit…Additionally, all students who have excessive tardies (six or more per quarter) may be referred to the Child Study Team to be considered for possible retention or loss of credit…”

Please assist the staff of Baker High School in ensuring the regular attendance to school of your student. If a student must miss school and his/her absences exceed nine (9) in any class for the semester, be sure to submit to the Attendance Mailbox located outside of Student Services (1) a doctor/dentist note, (2) court documentation, or (3) documentation of a family loss to be considered by the Child Study Team for the restoration of course credit. |
